How to read this ranking

Quantum communication is the smallest of the three technology cohorts in our dataset, with 10 tracked companies and about $772M of disclosed financing. The number understates the sector: QKD networks, quantum-secure backbones and satellite links are frequently funded through state capital, public procurement and registered-capital injections rather than priced venture rounds.

A market shaped by procurement, not venture capital

A listed QKD equipment supplier, a state-owned quantum network operator and a university spin-out building photonic network interfaces all appear in this table, yet their capital structures have almost nothing in common. One raised money in a public offering, one was capitalised by a parent, and one priced a private round.

That is why we show the round label next to each event in the funding timeline. Reading a registered-capital injection as if it were a Series B would produce a badly misleading comparison with a venture-backed networking startup elsewhere.

Why the totals look small while deployments look large

Infrastructure programmes are often reported as multi-year budgets or procurement contracts spread across several suppliers; neither is a financing round and neither belongs in a company-level funding total. The result is a quiet-looking column here alongside some of the most physically deployed quantum technology in the world.

We would rather publish a conservative figure with an explicit limitation than convert a national programme budget into a corporate fundraise. Readers comparing this page with the computing page should expect the gap to reflect accounting conventions at least as much as real investment differences.

Three business models under one label

Equipment makers sell QKD terminals and trusted nodes. Network operators build and run quantum-secure links, often with a telecom incumbent as parent. Component and software vendors supply single-photon detectors, random-number generators and key-management layers to both groups. Each has a different capital requirement and a different path to revenue.

For an investor or analyst, the useful split is therefore by position in the supply chain, not by the quantum technology label. Our companies directory keeps those descriptions so the table can be filtered and re-read accordingly.

How to read a disclosure from this sector

Chinese-language announcements frequently state a registered-capital or project-investment figure rather than a round size, and a STAR Market listing is a public-market event. We convert RMB at an approximate rate, mark the result as approximate, and never infer a valuation where none was disclosed. If a figure is missing, the row shows an undisclosed label rather than a zero.

What the numbers on this page actually show

Of the 10 companies on this list, 10 have a disclosed cumulative figure and 0 do not. The median disclosed total is $30M; the three largest rows (China Telecom Quantum Group, QuantumCTek, Nu Quantum) account for roughly 80% of all capital tracked here, led by China Telecom Quantum Group. That concentration is a property of capital-intensive hardware, not a verdict on which technology works best.

Every figure is a lower bound. Undisclosed rounds, partially disclosed RMB amounts, grants bundled into a financing package and public-market programmes drawn down over months all move the same row in different directions. We publish the underlying JSON so you can recompute the table under your own rules; the ranking rule itself is documented on the methodology page, and the reasoning behind editorial choices is on the editorial policy page.
